This chasen is carefully handcrafted by Suikaen Tanimura Yasaburo Shoten.

Tanimura Yasaburo Shoten is one of the only 16 or so remaining chasen masters in Japan. The Tanimura family has been at this house making chasen for 530 years. Yasaburo is the 25th generation chasen maker in his family.

These whisks are made from locally grown bamboo in the small village of Takayama, famed as the only chasen making village in Japan.

Unlike mass produced matcha whisks, these chasen are entirely handmade, without the use of machines or chemicals to expedite the bamboo growing, drying, or shaping processes, requiring immense time and skill to craft. As such, Takayama chasen have finer, more flexible tines and a greater attention to detail, which not only makes them more beautiful, but also easier and more enjoyable to use and more durable in the long run.

Before First Use

Before using for the first time, gently soak only the prongs in hot water. This softens the bamboo and helps prevent breakage. Avoid soaking the handle.

Care & Precautions

  • Use gently, pressing firmly against the bottom of the tea bowl may cause the prongs to snap.
  • Do not place in a dishwasher.
  • After use, rinse with water and allow to dry completely before storing.
  • Store in a cool, dry place away from humidity, extreme dryness, heat, and direct sunlight.
