Crafted in Takayama, Nara, the historic center of chasen production for over 500 years, this whisk is made by Nakata Kizo, a workshop responsible for producing roughly half of Japan’s bamboo tea whisks today. Nakata Kizo is also one of the few remaining workshops dedicated to the centuries old art of tea whisk making. Made from carefully selected darkened bamboo, it reflects both time honored craftsmanship and a refined, elegant aesthetic.

The Shin shape is one of the most popular due to its elegant curves, and is preferred by students of both Urasenke and Omotesenke schools of tea ceremony.

Unlike massproduced matcha whisks, these chasen are entirely handmade, without the use of machines or chemicals to expedite the bamboo growing, drying, or shaping processes, requiring immense time and skill to craft. As such, Takayama chasen have finer, more flexible tines and a greater attention to detail, which not only makes them more beautiful, but also easier and more enjoyable to use and more durable in the long run.

Before First Use

Before using for the first time, gently soak only the prongs in hot water. This softens the bamboo and helps prevent breakage. Avoid soaking the handle.

Care & Precautions

  • Use gently—pressing firmly against the bottom of the tea bowl may cause the prongs to snap.
  • Do not place in a dishwasher.
  • After use, rinse with water and allow to dry completely before storing.
  • Store in a cool, dry place away from humidity, extreme dryness, heat, and direct sunlight.
