SUIKAEN carries on the 500-year tradition of Chasen (tea whisks) making in Takayama, Nara, while introducing the craft to the world through innovative ideas, such as new weaving styles using colored threads and designs featuring decorative charms.
Crafted in Takayama, Japan, this chasen is made by Suikaen—one of the few remaining studios dedicated to preserving the centuries-old art of tea whisk craftsmanship. Suikaen’s lineage dates back to the 16th century, and the studio is currently led by Tanimura Yasuburo, the 25th-generation master craftsman.
Before First Use
Before using for the first time, gently soak only the prongs in hot water. This softens the bamboo and helps prevent the prongs from snapping. Avoid soaking the handle.
Care & Precautions
- Use the chasen gently; pressing it firmly against the bottom of the tea bowl may cause the prongs to break.
- Do not place in a dishwasher.
- After use, rinse with water and allow to dry completely before storing.
- Store in a cool, dry place away from high humidity, extreme dryness, heat, and direct sunlight.
